THIS sinister picture exhibits the solar setting by way of thick smoke from the large Williams Flats wildfire within the east of Washington state. In addition to the gray smoke, which is what makes the solar look unusual, there are huge white clouds referred to as pyrocumulonimbus brought on by the fireplace’s warmth.

The picture was captured by meteorologist David Peterson from a NASA analysis airplane. There are only a few photographs of those clouds, says Peterson, and hardly any from above. His was taken at 8 pm on 8 August from a peak of 9 kilometres. …
